Network File Sharing problem

I am setting up a home network on two computers, one being an Inspiron 6000 laptop. They are connected via LAN cable to a Linksys router. I ran the "Set up a home or small office network" separately on each computer and Allow File and Printer Sharing was enabled on both computers, and both computers are on the same workgroup. The problem is, the Inspiron's shared files are not accessible by the other computer even though there are multiple folders shared. Access Denied comes up when trying to click on the computer in the workgroup window. However, the Inspiron can access files on the other computer. I completely disabled all firewalls and antivirus programs on the Inspiron. Remote desktop is enabled on both computers if that does anything. Anyone know how to fix the problem?
 
are you using the same logon credentials. On the other machine try mounting the inspiron shared folders to a drive and when you do specify that you want to do it under a user name and password that you know will work on the inspiron machine.
 
I am not quite sure what you are talking about. There aren't multiple user accounts on either machine. Only one for each. Could you explain in more detail? And yes, one computer is custom and the other is a Dell.
 
Try the long way round. Right-click on the folder to share, tell it to just enable file-sharing. On the other one, type in the address bar "//computername/directoryshare"
Do you still ge the error?
 
this may be a silly suggestion, but if you have not done so, reboot everything (pc's, router, switches etc). I have several PC's on my network and have ran in to this problem before.

I am having trouble trying to share external drives on the computer now. In computer management, the computer says the drives are shared, but there is no "shared hand" icon on the drives. When I try to type "\\computername\drive" it asks me for a user name and password. I don't know what to type in here. Anyone have any ideas?
 
I'd chalk it up to one of the great windows file sharing blunders. Windows sharing is only fully functional with server. If you put in the username and password of the other computer, does it work?

sounds like you are haveing permissions problems, make sure "Everyone" has full control of the shares on each computer. reboot, and connect.
 
another thing that i have had success with is making sure all the computers are on the same workgroup. make your shares available to everyone with full control.
