I'm having problems installing Windows xp on my old dell lappy. I had it running Debian, but decided that since its just sitting under my bed that I'd pull it out and put it in my car and use it as a GPS.. I couldn't get my GPS to run in debian so I ran about half of an installation of windows xp then it died.. I tried it many times.. Would just die.. Come to find out my cdrom is about half busted and I don't really have any other media aside from pulling the hdd and getting some sort of IDE adapter or running a network installation.. But I don't know how to get a network installation going Windows xp to Windows xp. I have 2 pcs here that I could use to run the network install one is xp home the other xp pro.. But neither of them have RIS.. I've been looking all over the internet and I'm not finding any real solid resources... Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

I could be wrong but I don't think you can install from the network. Don't you need an OS to see the network? There may be someone smarter than me that knows how, but if it is possible, I don't think it will be easy.

Here's a number of Windows articles that may point you in the right direction:

edit:

Did some digging. You need 2 things. A computer running windows 2000 server with active directory and the ability to boot from network on the PC you want to install it on.

If you have those 2 things, there is a wizard in 2000 server to set up a network install. Run it, boot the other computer off of the network, type in user name and password, and install OS.
