ok ive got dsl modem that is connected to a Belkin wireless router... my windows 7 pc is wired in and connects fine, my vista laptop is wireless and connects fine but when i hook my windows xp box up to the network it will not pull a ip... it will try and try and then go to limited or no connectivty. ive reset the router up on factory defaults and everything i can think of. the router is doing DHCP no static ips. when i set it to a static ip address on the network to try to make it connect it connects but no internet. i cant figure this out... im sure its something simply ive over looked.any ideas?

so you have the ip address to aquire an ip and dns address automatically?
make sure there are no firewalls, use a different lan cable. like a known good one from another machine. do you get the "link" light om both of your devices network connections ( router and pc), try another port on the router. try opening a command prompt and do an ipconfig/release and renew. Try safe mode with networking...if you can connect in safe mode you mayhave an infection or spyware hampering your connection. If you just removed spyware or viruses there is a tool that will repair winsock...search for winsock repair tool or layered stack provider.

Yes it is setup to pull a ip address and the dns auto. no firewalls are on. it is a known good working cable it works fine and connects when i plug it into the windows 7 machine. The link light is on on both router and pc when i set it to static ip, but no internet. when it is set to auto like i want it to be only the router shows and link light and the computer will never connect. Ive allready tryed ipconfig /release and /renew so many times, ive swaped the ports on the router. ive stuck a pci network card in and same issue. I have not tried safe mode networking yet, but ill try that as soon as i get home. Thanks for the help ill post the results.

Sounds like the tcp stack is corrupt or the network card is bad. There is a way to rebuild the stack with netsh command, wish it was as easy as it was with win98. Look for a free App on the net called winsock repair tool , uses the netsh command to redo winsock, you could also try a pci network card or a usb network card or redo your drivers for the network card you have...it is nice to have a usb network card around for testing anyway. Sounds to me like the card is either going off when dynamic mode or going into half duplex.

edit: oh i see you tried another pci network card...maybe it is the router, are you using mac tables in the roter... try resetting the router. back to like the day it was new,,,,first connect the trouble pc to another pc to see if both link lights come on using dynamic ip..if they do it is the router.
