Networking help..WinXP and Win98

I need some help setting up an additional computer through a network process.

Here are the players: Windows XP is host computer. The other computer I wish to network is running Windows 98. Both computers have ethernet outlets built in to motherboards. I also connect to the internet on host computer via high speed Comcast Broadband and am using a router which happens to also run a third computer that has it's own Win XP operating system.

Ideally, the computer which now has a Windows 98 operating systems, I would like to network and be able to share files and be able to have WinXP access on this computer. If that is not possible for some reason, I would at least like to be able to have internet access. I have all ready bought 2 copies of WInXP and won't be springing for another, so it would be nice to be able to tap into my host computer so that I can have XP on the system that is now Windows 98. I suspect that Microsoft may have something in design that may prevent that....maybe not???? (hopefullly)

Anyone who can give me some detailed instructions, please do so.

Thanks.....Steve!

this is possible, windows 9x networking is not all that great,
have you setup ran network setup " setup home office network " yet ?

Thanks DeepBlue for your reply.

I am not sure....I fooled around with it for a whole day and wasn't getting the results I wanted and will take another look today.

Would I be setting up "Home Office Networtk' on both host computer (WinXP) and Win98?

What happens if I connect Ethernet to Ethernet without going through modem and router where Internet feeds into host computer. Probably just be able to share files and not internet. Sure would like to be able to get benefits of XP on the computer that has WIN98 now by tapping into the main computer that has XP running.

you dont need a host computer, in a way your router is a host that shares the internet with both computers, you do need to set up a small office network on both the XP and the 98 system.

" control panel>network connections> setup a home or small office network. next twice. select other then next and select the top one " this computer connects to the internet directory or through a hub.... blah blah blah blah " and next until your done, "

as far as the connecting both systems ethernet to ethernet you would need a cross over cable and that will only let you send data between the 2 systems and you would not be able to connect to the internet without 2nd ethernet card in one of the systems.

i think you need a Windows 98SE OS to network it with XP, make sure you have that and do what DeepBlue said.

it should be easy enough to set it all up, is the Windows 98 computer currently connected to the router?
and when you set up the file sharing, you need to make sure both computers are in the same Workgroup.... I.e. "MSHOME" or "WORKGROUP", if they are not the same they cannot share easily (or at all maybe).
