if i use a network switch will it automatically assign all the ip stuff, and work without software installation?

Yes, use the switch, but if you use the switch both xbox and PC needs to use static IP.
As for the router, did you setup xbox correctly for DHCP ?

idn, how do i get a static ip? doesnt that depend on ur isp? mines not static, wats DHCP? my xbox said something about that

its perminate, i want my pc and xbox sharing a cable connection, so an ethernet connection and now i have to switch the cable between them and reset the modem each time i switch the cable, when they were both plugged into the router on my computer would work, after i tried to congigure it the router got messed up. So im askin if a switch would work better, most say u just plug and play, no installation required

your ISP is giving you dhcp you cant change that.
So when you plug PC into the router it works and xbox won't ?
then go to the network settings of xbox and configure there !!
the problem here is with xbox

well it works when i just plug in the cable from the modem to the xbox, just not from the router, but the router was crappy ehome for 5 bucks, its like messed up now

so where exactly will you place the switch ?
or you can put the switch after the router so it's like below :

ISP-->router-->switch-->xbox and PC

so
ISP-->router-->xbox and PC , dont work right ?
