Never Overclocked Before

I guess I'm a noob.

I have an AMD Phenom II Quad Core on my new computer I built. My motherboard has a Turbo Boost AND Core Unlocker switches on it. I assumed these would overclock it, but my computer actually seems to be running SLOW!

Any suggestions? Should I turn these switches off and try something else?

Thanks in advance for the help.

core unlocker is really kinda unnecessary due to the quad phenom, but the turbo boost might be more useful to you than simply doing an overclock...does your system have a aftermarket cooler on it or are you using the OEM included fan unit? and have you tried scanning the system for malware or something? because the system should not be slow...not with a phenom Quad

Since you have a X4, the core unlocker has nothing to unlock. Unless you have a 800 series Phenom II that could unlock the rest of the L3.

AMD doesnt have Turbo Boost. Its Turbo Core and it only works with the X6

It's Asus that has the Turbo Boost. It raises the mulitiplier .5., so it's pointless. I didn't install that.
It has ocing software as well with an 'auto overclock' feature that supposedly oc's to maximum stable, or you can stop it at some point along the way. The software also allows you to tweak all the oc settings individually(not just cpu). Or you can make all the adjustments the bios which is probly best.(or just raise the multiplier in the bios for the cpu).
Don't use the mb switches, just turn them off.

edit: suggestion-unplug and discharge, turn off switches, make sure bios is @ default, oc.
edit x2: doesnt sound like an oc will fix the slowness.

What speeds do you think or I can oc to, or how do I know when I've oc'ed too much?

My MSI board came with an AMD Overdrive program that makes overclocking the easier than i ever thought it was, although im not sure if the program is compatible with other mobo's. either way, you can overclock in the Bios. What kind of Phenom x4 chip do you have exactly?

The amount of stable overclock you can achieve depends on the cpu you have? Which one is it?
It also depends on the cooling. You can oc some with the stock cooler. Is it stock or 3rd party?

EDIT: You've overclocked too much if the pc starts having issues, crashes or starts running too hot.

TS and I have the same mb and amd overdrive. What do you think of the 'auto oc'? Does it oc the bus-ram(speed/timing/v's)/cpu and all the other available bios adjustments for a midrange oc? Iv'e used the 'auto' once and it stopped/stable(at least for that mini stress test it does) @ 3.7 but I didn't check all the setting it applied. Once I manually upped the cpu v in the od manual settings and nothing else<-up to 3.9 Didn't really know what I was doing since I hadn't oc'ed before or know the correct bios terms for each and know how to manipulate everything harmoniously, so each time I went back to stock right after.
