New 9600gt

Yes, 9600gt is much faster than the 8600gt one.
Maybe try waiting a little for the new, 9800gx2 one, to appear ?- the price should decrease.

for the price of the 9600 being 199, personaly i would get the 8800gts ( g92) for 50 dallors more after rebate. wich the 8800gts will still out work the 9600

I don't think it's easy for someone else to spend another $50 over their set goal  .

$50 is not that much, if you can afford a Nvidia 9600 then you can afford to go the extra bit for the 8800GTS. I'm waiting for the high end of the Nvidia 9 series before I jump on the bandwagon.

Key word is AR (after rebate). Someone'd have to pump out an extra $100 for the GTS.. only after 2-3 months waiting for that rebate check, that might not come, would your assessment fit actuality.

I don't believe so, but it comes close. 15% less performance, as I hear people calling it equal to a 3870.
From what i have seen in reviews, the 9600GT fits right between the 3850/3870 and just under the 8800GT

The 9800 series, its looking like its going to be G92 based, not G94 :(

I would personally get the 3870 then, especially with the recent price drops. I mentioned it another thread, the 9600gt is supposed to have some sort of contrast enhancement, whatever that is, it's supposed to make video's looks better. I saw pics, it seems to just make the color appear more enhanced. BS.

I would get the 8800GT 256 MB, or just find a deal on the 512 MB version. I would assume both are considerably better than the 9600GT.

Actually, the 9600GT beats the HD3870 (which is somewhat close to 8800GT performance-wise) in some benchies including COD4. So I wouldn't say it is a bad deal at all, even over the 8800GT 256MB or HD3870. :)

Eh.. I wouldn't personally consider the 256mb version of the 8800gt. I'm pretty cheap, and I like to get the most out of all my components, for the longest possible time. From what I've saw the 256mb on the GT is already posing a bottleneck on the card in certain games, in a year or so, that number will have probably increased exponentially.

In about a month I'll (finally) have the funds to get a new card. Price drops, new cards, the decision would have been much easier a month ago. I still have my eye on a 8800gt or GTS..

I looked around some websites to find that the 9600GT is not as good as a 8800GT and found a rumour that wouldnt strike me as surprising but the 9800GT is basicly a remake of an 8800GT. Its hard to tell when they are not out.
