So the Phenom II is still the better duel core cause of the extra cache???

What about the rest, is the Athlon II just a phenom II based true duel core?

Well sorta.

The Athlon II X2 has 1mb.of L2 on each core for a total of 2. No L3.
The Phenom II X2 has 512kb. of L2 each core and 6mb. of L3.

Other than the cache the core is the same.
On a equal ghz. the Phenom is the better performer. Plus with the Phenom X2 and X3 you have the chance of unlocking the disabled cores with the right board and processor.

Interesting new processor. The Phenom II 710 Tri-Core processor at $99 is a better deal than the Athlon II 545 Dual-Core for $89.

If I was going to go with an Athlon II processor I would go with the Athlon II 245 Regor for $68.

What processing power does the Athlon II 545 Dual-Core Callisto equal when compared to a model of the Core 2 Duo processors? I am guessing it beats the Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale processor by a little bit.

Edit: Oops, I meant Phenom II 545 Callisto Dual-Core not Athlon II 545.

2 cores disabled?

Yep - when they're making the Phenom II quad core chips - they don't all come out to spec. The ones that don't make specs are binned down to the next level. i.e. Phenom II 955 was top spec - and some CPU's that didn't match the specs - were binned down to Phenom II 945's - etc.

There is also a natural demand as a given price point ( some are willing to pay less for lower clock speed - or fewer cores at a higher clock speed ) for some of the lesser expensive chips that people aren't wiling to pay top dollar - and the mfr shuts down parts of a chip that meets higher specs ( not exactly sure what the mechanism they use is ) to fill the demand at the lower price point.

* You never know why your specific cpu was binned ( to meet demand - or b/c it didn't meet specs )
* It's why some CPU's overclock more than others - even though they are the same make and model.
* This is also why some are able to take a Phenom II dual or triple core - and unlock the cores through their bios on the motherboard.

Intel and AMD both do this with their chips.

Performance is roughly similar to the E7x00 core 2 duos.

Price->Performance is a heck of alot better than intel, for the price of say, an E2220 you can get the Phenom II 545. 65nm vs 45nm, plus not being on a dead socket.
