just had to replace my motherboard and have never done one before. I think I'm having trouble with the front pannel cables that connect to the power switches, reset button and HDD Light.

Not entirely sure which way they go round. I know the order as printed in the users guide but the cables have no indication as to which direction they go.

can anyone help?

the white cable is usually the negative, the reset/powerbuttons will work no matter which way you put them on, the HDD LED will only work one way, but if the light doesn't turn on just flip the connector around

Ive got an asus AI P4p800. can you not use a standard power supply for it? how can you tell whether the power supply is atx12v?

the ATX12V is the plug with 4 contacts, its the square shaped plug

up and to the left of the cpu socket, most ATX powersupplies will have it, its just a matter of plugging it in
