New black DVD+RW doesn't work good at all

I have a new computer with a Lite-On DVD+RW model SHM-160P6S. It's black, because that's important.

One day it's all like, "Hey, there's a cd in me, I think I'll play it like you paid me to." The next day it's all like, "What do you mean there's a cd in me? Go ahead and try to click on the D drive and I'll just stall for awhile until a My Computer Not Responding box pops up."

What the bloody H is going on? It would be much simpler if the computer just wasn't recognizing the disk drive, cause that's happened before. But I've never seen it recognize the D drive (minus the disk inside), heard the disk spinning around, seen the green light flashing, and gotten absolutely no response. And no discernable Technical Support number on LiteOn's website to boot.

Anyone know anything 'bout this? I'd surely appreciate it.

What is it set as? Master, slave, or cable select. I had a similar problem one day and all I had to do was remove the DMA jumper from it and leave it as master.
