New build but what direction

I've got about $700.00 and I'm looking to build a new system. Mainly I'll need a MOBO, CPU, and Memory. I'm currently using a socket 939 dual core and would like some advice between the AMD2 5600 or the C2D E6600. I've never used Intel before and don't know much about them other than the name.I would like a platform that could possible be upgraded at least once or twice before changing everything again. If you have any other suggestions on these parts please feel free to advise, as I do not want to be throwing money away. Thanks

AMD is usaully used for gaming systems and media, whilst intel is used for multi-tasking.
generally intel is slightly more expensive

Intel is what most PC's use if made with DELL

Since you have pretty much a midget budget i would suggest AM2 and like a 4600+ or 4200+ model to keep it fitting the budget.

@tjcoops:
wrong that was in the past now it doesn't matter, intel has much better processors than AM2 but have bigger prices, where is AMD winning with processors under 100$

in the UK intel has much higher clock speeds than amd.

Highest Intel in UK: 15.4 ghz

Highest AMD in UK: about 8ghz

Because Intel's highest is higher, it doesn't mean that on average they are. In fact AMD X2's compared with the C2D's, the X2's slightly shade the clock speeds in AMD's favor. But that doesn't mean that X2's are better, because C2d's have far better architecture.;)

Right now is quite confusing time in the motherboard market because the top ASUS MB which supports new DDR3 memory does NOT support DDR2. That's why right now is not the best time to suggest a system which could be upgraded at least once or twice like you said, however, If I was to spend any money on the CPU, MB and Memory right now, (and knowing that I'll most likely have to upgrade all over again within a year) I'd pick:

CPU: E6600 (outperforms X2 5600 by about 10-20% on average)

MB: GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (very stable, quality board for the money)

MEMORY: G.SKILL 2GB DDR2 800mhz (fast, stable, quality ram)

223.90+129.99+109.99 = $463.99

P.s - If you are planning to overclock your CPU at all, I would personally suggest Scythe Infinity 5 cooler which can be bought here:

I've personally seen it used to overclock a E6600 from 2.4Mhz (stock) to 3.2mhz while keeping it perfectly stable and cool on the motherboard I recommended.

Good luck.

I really don't know alot about overclocking at this time . I have used the Asus A-I booster that came with my mobo to clock my 4400 to around 2400mhz. however what I'm mainly interested in is being able to start with a mid -range system and upgrade as needed . I understand that $700.00 might not buy alot but surely it will start me in the right direction. By buying a dual core cpu now and upgrading to a quad core later. I just don't know which Cpu to use AMD or Intel. Thanks for the advice though.

As of right now Intel is the way to go. The setup I mentioned above can easily be upgraded to quad core when Intel price cuts start in late July.

Good luck.

personally i use a C2D because it has 2 sepperate channals, one of which is used explicitly for graphics. AM2 socket processors are much cheeper tho, so on a tight budget it might be better for your purposes.

I've decided to wait until July and build a Intel system from these choices . What do you guys think?
The Q6600 Quad cpu , Asus P5N32-E SLI nForce 680i SLI Socket 775 1333MHz DDR2-800 and 2 gigs of Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX Twin2X Dual-Channel Memory Kits with DHX . That is if the price drops on the Q6600 as stated in another thread.

Yeah , I'm a big AMD fan , my current system is built on the 939 socket using the 4400+ dual core chip. If I were to go AMD on what I can afford at the moment it would be AMD2 which will not be upgradeable a Quad core later. Most people that I read about on this forum really praise the new Intel cpu's, and that is what I'm basing my choice on at the moment. Should anyone have a different solution please free to let me know. Thanks

Don't you need GPU?
Are you in urgent? Will you wait until 22/07 for the intel price drop and E6x50 series?

Don't need Gpu, already have 2 8600gt all I need is Mobo, Ram and Cpu. Yes I've just recently learned of the price drop and can wait to see what happens.
I'm still debating on AMD or Intel. However I do like the fact that the 1333mhz cpu's are coming out as well as a few boards. The Gigabyte was suggested to me but I favor Asus and I do need SLI.

Okay, I'm waiting until the price drops on the Q6600. Looking at mobo choices with SLI , is there one out that will support both DDR 2 and DDR 3 and the new 45nm cpu's when they come out. Or maybe I should just stay with DDR 2. What do you guys think ? What do you guys think of this board Asus P5N32-E SLI nForce 680i SLI Socket 775 1333MHz DDR2-800 and this memory Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX Twin2X Dual-Channel Memory Kits with DHX ? I would like to go ahead and order my mobo and memory now and the cpu in July when prices drop. Please feel free to advise me of any changes you might haveabout these parts.
