New build: Comments/suggestions welcome.

Well, I finally decided to jump in and try my hand at a custom build. It will be used primarily for moderate gaming, but will also have other functions which aren't really noteworthy and so this whole second half of the sentence is basically pointless (Yay fluff!)

So I did some tweaking based on the recommendations that were made (thank you very much everyone), checked out some reviews of Sandy Bridge, and here I am with an altered build plan.


Intel i5-2500K
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3
Corsair XMS3 1333 (4GB)
Corsair CMPSU-600CX
Radeon HD 6850
1 TB HDD
Cooler Master HAF 922
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

How's that look?

This machine deserve better better video card. Get GTX 460 1GB or 6850.

PSU - I assume you plan to SLi/ Crossfire, that is why you choose X58 platform??
Get 750W instead to leave enough room for dual video card in future. If you are not prepare to dual-graphic card, you could consider 2600K which will release soon
 
Yes, I know about SB releasing, but I decided to stick with the current i7 line.

Unless SB will be noticeably better in terms of performance, I'm none too worried about it.

Also, I originally had the GTX 460 in the build, but decided to go with a cheaper alternative. Think it's worth the extra cash?

I suggest you check the review before you buy.
 
if your budget allows id find a modular psu, such as the corsair hx, or ax series alos you should up the watts like said before. Also are 2 hard drives a must, I think a single 1TB hard drive is cheaper isnt it? and like said a better graphics card for your build the 5770 just doesnt do it justice, i was going to say a 5870 but i think that throws you way over your budget
 
An i7 would be hugely bottlenecked by a 5770. An more ideal match would be a Radeon HD69xx/68xx or Geforce GTX570/580. The older Radeon HD58xx or Grforce GTX 470/480 cards would also be ok, if you find a good price on them. The GTX 460 1GB is about the lowest I'd recommend going...it can sometimes hit about the same performance levels as a GTX 470 when overclocked.

If those are all too expensive, I'd recommend dropping down to an i5 sandy bridge build, or even an AMD build. A Phenom II x4 (or x6) would be a decent match for the 460 or, ideally, some flavor of Radeon HD 68xx.

They do still hold their own with the high end cards I mentioned, though I'd guess that once you get above the 6950 in power, the X4 will start to fall behind a bit. Nothing a good overclock won't fix. :)

What model hard drive do you have? IT just says 1TB. You'll want a WD Caviar Black or Samsung Spinpoint F3. Performance is as near as makes no difference between them. The WD is more expensive, but has 2 more years on the warranty.

Most enthusiast builds go for DDR3 1600 over 1333, since there's not a huge price gap in them. Either way, if it's CAS9, don't get anything that runs above 1.5V.

Other than that, as long as you put a quality PSU in there, it looks good to go.

Oh, it's a Caviar Black. Out of habit I just put the capacity. As for the RAM, I'm not particularly worried about the clock speed, and the set I chose is 1.5V. I know a little bit, just not a lot :P

Edit: Also swapped out the power supply for a 650TX from Corsair.

When building a rig with gaming intentions, I think the most amount should go to a decent GPU and PSU, but you said you had other intentions so I guess some balance is due.

lol your gonna hate us... stay away from the corsair TX line... evidently right now they are made with cheaper parts than they used to me... the HX and AX series are still safe though. http://www.overclock.net/power-supplies/898000-corsair-tx-line-changed-secret.html
