New build / Experienced help request

Hi everyone.

This is my first post. I've recently built a PC:

Operating System: XP Professional SP3
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R
Graphics: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4870
HD: 1TB, 2 x 1.5TB, 300Gig (all at 7200rpms)
Memory: 6GB (3 x 2GB)
Monitor: 22" Widescreen
Case:Coolermaster Storm case w/Acoustic sound proofing
CPU Fan: Zalman CNPS9900 LED
Fans: Nexus 120mm x 2
Siig 3-port firewire PCI i/e
PSU: CORSAIR 620HX 620W

My issues are with noise/temperature and overall speed. I'm using Easytune 6 to regular my fan speeds but I'm getting CPU temps of around 48 with the Fan at 2000rpms so its extremely noisy. The temp obviously goes up if I reduce the fan/noise speed. Also that temp is just with Firefox open. I'm not doing anything else. I use it mostly for audio production and can run my software to very high specs without any issues but general use of the PC seems fairly slow. My Laptop is generally faster (1.6Ghz). What is a good fans speed vs temp vs noise setting for me?

I've also been getting DEP error lately. Windows explorer. I've tried using Shexview today and disable various things to see what is causing it.

Any help would be great appreciated !

Many Thanks!
Jam

For the DEP error:

RESOLUTION
To avoid this behavior, contact your program vendor to see if an update is available that enables the program to work correctly with DEP.

WORKAROUND
If your computer is set to apply DEP to all programs and services, the DEP error message will have a Change Settings button. If an update to the program is not available, follow these steps to add an exception for the program from the DEP error message:
When you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, click Change Settings.
Click to select the check box next to the program, and then click Apply.
When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK two times, and then restart your system.

You can also add an exception for the program by using System Properties in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
Click the Advanced tab, click Performance, and then click Settings.
In Performance Options, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Add.
In the Open dialog box, locate and then click the program.
Click Open, click Apply, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.

I would have to assume the heatsink was installed improperly.

What method did you use to apply the Thermal Interface Material?

Hey.. thanks for the replies.

I've added Windows Explorer to the DEP exceptions.

Re: The heatsink:
I painted it on using the brush that came with the paste.

My issues are with noise/temperature and overall speed. I'm using Easytune 6 to regular my fan speeds but I'm getting CPU temps of around 48 with the Fan at 2000rpms so its extremely noisy. The temp obviously goes up if I reduce the fan/noise speed.

I let my PC choose fan speed on it's own - but FYI - my PC idols around 48 degrees - so that's not too uncommon - I'm guessing you have a C0 step CPU based on higher temps.

I'm not too sure I understand C0 step...

I sometimes let Easytune chose the fans speeds but its' still pretty noisy.

Get some IC 7 Diamond and reapply your heatsink. I switched from Arctic Silver 5 to IC 7 and my temps dropped by about 5C at idle and over 10C at full load. 48C is a little too high at stock speeds and with aftermarket cooler imo. I idle at 43-45 and never go over 80 even at 4ghz. So I'd try getting some ic7 and see how it goes :)

EDIT: Download CPU-Z and look at REVISION. It will either say C0/C1 or D0.

OK - CPU Usage is between 40 -60-ish % and Temp is at 57. I have firefox open and doing a virus scan (Kaspersky). Is that normal? It's been about 7 years since I have a PC so maybe I'm just out-of-date? ;-)

That is the older one but you won't notice a difference unless you plan on getting a high overclock.
