New Build (Extreme)

Hey All!!

I will be Building an extreme machine, any suggestions? It's been a few years since my last build and I was very pleased with it. Currently I am running Intel i7 930 on a gigabyte board, using dominator ram and a solid state drive, also a gtx 260 video card. I want the latest and greatest :)

I am possibly looking at this CPU Core i7 3930K 3.2GHz LGA 2011 is there a faster intel CPU I should take a look at?

http://www.microcenter.com/product/376493/Core_i7_3930K_32GHz_LGA_2011_Boxed_Processor

I have been out of the loop for awhile and have not kept up with the latest. I want to have balance and everything must be fast for gamming mostly.

Any suggestions would be awesome! Like what mother boards and video card to match up for best performance.

Thanks, will be back later today.

If you want better gaming performance skip the new build and just put in a really good cooler OC the 930 and buy a new GPU. i7 930s are not bad processors at all.

Yeah I would put a liquid cooler on the 930 oc it to 4.5 ghz, get 12/9 gb of ram if you don't have that much already, and get something like a gtx 780.

you are not going to get 4.5 out of a 930. 4.0/4.1 would be reasonable if he has good enough cooling. Corsair H100/H110 or one of the dual tower air coolers should be able to get him in that range. Doesn't really matter though he would be fine at stock anyway.

Yeah, I might have over exaggerated a bit by saying 4.5 :D

4.5 seems pretty normal these days. It was not that long ago where 4.0/4.1 was a pretty decent OC.

@rlane can you post your current setup for us? I just want to see what you are currently using to figure out the best upgrade path.

Overclock the 930 perhaps and get yourself a 770.

Should all be good so long as your power supply is up to it.

+1 We need to see your current setup. And, do you want to upgrade?

I am definitely not out to upgrade :)
I put most of my current box in my first post:

CPU: Core i7 930
GPU: GTX 260 896MB MAXCORE 55
RAM: 6 GIG DOMINATOR
HDD: Solid State 3.0
SPEAKERS: Altec Lansing
MONITOR: Samsung Sync Master 940bf
HEAD PHONES: Fatality
GAME PAD: Belkin N52te
MOUSE: Microsoft Side Winder

PSU?

Honestly it would be a waste to upgrade for gaming. CAD? Sure I can see the upgrade. but since you asked here is where I would start

PSU depends on if you go SLI or Xfire or not. If you are going this overboard for gaming you might as well get 80+ Gold or Platinum

Seriously though the performance would not be all that much different. OC the 930 and get one or two of the GPUs that I mentioned (if your PSU can handle it) and a better monitor. you will be way happier with the upgrade.

Read the whole thread. And I think a 780 and a Corsair H100i+CPU OC will make the PC max out all games again. How old is your PSU? And what model is it?

QFT. Just because it was a few years old does not mean that it is obsolete. I still wish I was running my i7 930.

Woulda saved me a few bucks if I just would of bought a i7 930 (or 920) used instead of me getting a ROG board and a future 8350 :P

yeah I still have my 930. My board broke and I didn't want to pay $250 for a new one. Maybe I'll find another good deal and get it running again.

This is my new build:

CASE: Corsair Vengeance C20 ATX Case

MOTHERBOARD: Asus Sabertooth X79 2011 ATX

CPU: Intel Core i7 3930K

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair 750 Watt

MEMMORY: Crucial 32 Gig 1600

VIDEO CARD: EVGA GTX780SC 3GB ACX DDHDP (possibly SLI at later date)

HDD1: Samsung 128 Gig SSD 840 Pro

HDD2: Seagate 1 Terabit SATA 7200 RPM (for back up data and junk)

HEAT SINK: Corsair Hydro H110Liquid Cooler

OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

KEYBOARD: Thermaltake Meka G1 Gaming

MONITOR: LG 27” Led 5MS

DVD BURNER: LG 14X Blue Ray

Have to put the cooler and video in and install operating system still, should be good to go by the weekend.

Thanks for your suggestions and input :)

It's nice, but you don't want to upgrade your current build? And I will take that 260 off your hands :D and go Windows 8, not 7.

Get an i7 4770K and a Z87 board. Save a lot of money whilst not losing a great deal of performance (especially in games). The Gigabyte Z87X-OC would be a good board to buy.

May as well get a 256GB SSD too. Why not get a 2TB or 3TB hard drive? Especially once you've saved money on the processor and motherboard.

OS is a personal choice, get what you want.

Rest looks good.
