New build just not running as well

Hi guys, so first some backstory, I used to have a water cooled amd first gen 8 core cpu with the asus Maximus motherboard 16gb of ddr3 ram, a sapphire Radeon 7970 and a 250gb solid state hard drive with and 850w power supply. I recently built a whole new comp with a sky lake I-5 6600k, air cooled. intel socket ASUS Maximus VIII board 8gb ddr4 ram gigabyte gtx 1080, a 1tb samsung ssd. Now I also upgraded my 28" Samsung 1080p monitor to a 34" 1440p dell ultrawide... but I figured that the impact would be minimal based on the scope and magnitude of my upgrade. However, I will have a game running on ultra 1440p getting 70 fps vsync locked to my overclocked monitor and it works great... the second I windowed mode games like wow, the witcher, and overwatch and open up say Edge browsers my comps performance goes to crap... why is my hyperthreaded super whamodine processor bottlenecking? Task manager has edge using about 25% of my processor power for standard yahoo news browsing. While I do get that I used to have an 8 core processor, an intel I-5 with 4 cores that is 4 gen ahead of an AMD cpu should be rocking the socks off of everything, what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
 
My bad, I know it isn't, I was thinking 4 cores and said hyperthread for some reason.
More importantly though, edge should not in any universe be using 25% or my processor for yahoo news and a forum open its quite strange
 
Edge using 25% indicates a tab or thread likely hung, or is doing some uncapped super refresh or resource intensive shenanigans.

Do you get the same behavior with all other background applications closed while in windowed mode?

As per others, the 6600K is non hyperthreaded 4c/4t.
 
No everything seems to run perfectly when It is just the game open in windowed mode... I guess I just underestimated the performance of the processor for the new setup and multi tasking

i5 with a GTX 1080 seems a little off balance.

Not sure if you can return the CPU (Amazon allowed me to once hehe), but I'd pay the extra $100 and step up to the i7-6700K since it does HT.

Explain in further detail on "performance goes to crap". Will need more info on this to help.

In what way is it going to crap? Have you tried other web browsers to see if you can isolate the problem being an Edge problem rather than your CPU?

What specific websites do you have open when it's at 25% utilization? It sounds like one of the cores is being pegged and sending interrupts at the game thread.

This was likely less of an issue on the FX since you were only isolated to one core/thread of max utilization of which there were 7 others. Depending on how the game is threaded it might not touch the game CPU resources in that case.

Personally I'd ditch Edge for Chrome or something, or at least use it as a test subject to try to reproduce the behavior onto another browser.
