So I got some parts and put them together:

asus p45 deluxe mobo
e5300 processor
4 gigs ddr2 ram
hd5750 video card
500gig barracuda sata drive
earthwatts 500watt psu

so i put them together like i said, and when i tried installing windows 7 i end up getting a blue screen. so i try again the next day, i get 7 on there but when i restart the computer it won't do anything anymore it just keeps restarting. so i try again the next day and get 7 on it, install all my drivers, reboot several times, and it's fine. but i leave it on for like 2 hours and come back to it and the screen is black, i can get the desktop to come up so i restart it, and haven't been able to get to the os since. i get a few different screen, one in particular says to run windows repair something. so i do and run a memory test, the test says that "hardware problems were detected. to fix these problems contact the computer's manufacturer." oh wait, the test just finished and windows loaded up. so what might be going on?

EDIT: okay windows started and i got this in a little message box:

Did you use thermal paste when you put the heat sink on the cpu?
How much and which "method"? Single BB sized blob or spread?

Is the hard drive new?

Have you tried booting and running with only one stick of RAM at a time?

no, thermal paste, you think it's running too hot? the hard drive was used bought off amazon, and no, ram is my first guess as well, but i haven't tested it.

You mean, no thermal paste was used?

Was this a new processor and heat sink that
already had paste on it/them?

yeah. i didn't use any. there was some on it from the fan caused i used it on another cpu. but no new stuff. it might have been a problem with the smart doctor program that was pu on my computer. it let me set 2 clock speeds but i forgot what they were. i was stupid and maxed them out....so yeah...

If it's reused thermal paste, that could be the root of your problem.

Reused paste, especially the factory stuff that comes preapplied to the heatsink, will not re spread and fill all the gaps between your cpu and heat sink.

I bet if you can get the pc running and download RealTemp, you'll see your temps are way too high.

Every time you remove and reapply a heat sink to a cpu, you need to thoroughly clean the old stuff off and reapply it. Every time.

can you explain a gray screen then? just at random it comes up. it doesn't say anything. its just a gray screen. that i can't get to go away unless i restart the pc.

I think your processor is getting way too hot.

You need to get that thermal paste cleaned off and new stuff applied ASAP or you may damage your processor.

I wouldn't start the computer again until you've done this.

so, beyond that you think nothing is wrong? i thought when your processor got to hot it would shut the system down and when you turned it on you would get a beep code?

Im with Bod. If you did not use extra thermal paste, then you could be frying you CPU. Take care of that first...

okay, so i applied some compound and I downloaded that realtemp. So what's a good temp for my cpu to be running?

Stock? And at idle? Mine is around 35C, which sound about right. When maxed out, you should try to keep your temps around 55C, no higher than 57C to be safe.

okay. mine stays at around 35. and it's been doing fine so i suppose that fixed the problem. does anyone know what smart doctor is? i got it with my hd 5750 and it kind of monitors my card. but it has the options to increase my engine clock speed and my ram clock speed. i know this isn't how you normally overclock something, so you think it's safe?
