new build mobo question

I am building a new computer, specificaly for gaming. so far I have made quite a nice list however I am unsure about the motherboard. How much impact does the motherboard have on the computer as a whole. i understand that some are better for over clocking and some have other features than others but does it really matter that much? I am faced with the decision to get a gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 for $209 or I could go a much cheaper option and go for a basic mobo Asus P5kPL-VMfor $94. Both support 1066 ram and the chip that I am getting. I appreciate your advice thanx
 
P35-DS4 for $204 is too expensive! The X38-DS4 is just $200 from newegg.
By the way, I personally favour of Gigabyte/ MSI more.
For the mid-range one, I would suggest GA-P35-DS3R/ MSI P35 Neo2-FR
The asus you choosen is G31 chipset. I would be better you get one with P35 chipset
