I'm trying to figure out what parts to get for my next build, but I'm having some difficulty deciding. My biggest concern is how long the system would last? I'll be attending university for the next 5 years and I'd like to not have to get a completely new system for at least 2-3 years, but I would be willing to upgrade the GPU if need be. So I'm currently leaning towards getting the i7 system. The two systems I've been looking at are:

Intel Core i5 760 - 188.25€
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 - 184.75€
Corsair XMS3 CHS 1600MHz DDR3 CL7 2x2GB - 96.80€
AMD Radeon HD 6870 - ~240€
Total: 709.80€

or

Intel Core i7 950 - 316.35€
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R - 216.00€
Kingston HyperX 1600MHz DDR3 CL9 3x2GB - 113.15€
AMD Radeon HD 6870 or 6950 or 6970 - ~240€ (6870), ? (6950, 6970)
Total: 645.50€ + GPU


The rest of the build would consist of my current Blu-ray drive and these parts:
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB - 59.75€
Corsair HX-650 - 121.15€
Fractal Design Define XL - 129.00€
Noctua NH-D14 - 74.90€
Total: 384.80€

Core i5: 1094.60€
Core i7: 1030.30€ + GPU

Prices may not be up to date. They fluctuate quite often, but not by much.

Does anybody know the MSRP of the 69xx cards?

- Yes, I will be overclocking
- No, I don't need a sound card (my speakers aren't that good, so onboard audio will be just fine)
- I already have the OS (Windows 7 64-bit), keyboard, mouse, monitor and speakers

This computer will be used for gaming, rendering and some encoding.

Comments, recommendations etc. are welcome.
 
Go for the i7 build! :) That CPU will be great for rendering and for OC-ing as well. Based on a few tech blogs I've read, the 6970 may debut around $459, give or take a few so that should give you an idea of how much to expect.

Thanks for the quick response.

The i7 is indeed very attractive as a basis for a build. If I go with the i7, which seems likely, then I will be getting everything but the GPU quite soon. I'll decide what GPU to get once the 69xx cards are released and in the meanwhile I'll use my 8800GT. That way I'll get to tweak the rest of the build before getting a new GPU. And I might even do some benchmarking so that I can see the performance difference between my 8800GT and the new card.

I've only seen very rough estimates on the price (anywhere from $400 to $500) of the 6970.
 
The second build, I would however wait to see how the 6000 series does in games before you buy one. If they aren't up to expectations, you could get a GTX 460. you said you may upgrade the GPU, and with that motherboard you could buy another 460 and SLI.

Though the powersupply may not like that.

I would still wait for the 6000 series to arrive before buying anything.
 
Like I said, I might buy most parts quite soon even if I go with the i7 build, but I'll wait for the 6950 and 6970 cards to be released before buying the new GPU. I'd prefer a single card setup.
