New case, now I have no sound...

Hey guys, finally the 25th came! :) So I got my new NZXT Apollo case and I changed everything from my old case. Everything works perfectly except the sound. I have no sound and whenever I try to play a song for example, a window pops up saying "Bad Direct Sound Driver..."

Any ideas? Thanks for any comments :o

Onboard or expansion there? If you have a separate card installed you may simply have to see it reseated if no drivers were knocked out during the transfer of hardwares there. What are you using for a player? would be another thing to ask if that needs a reinstall?

Its the onboard sound card. And not only on Winamp which is where the error message poped up but also on games and pretty much everything. There's no sound when I log in Win XP... :o

Since that is onboard there you can usually see that corrected easy enough by downloading the latest driver set for that model board at the manufacturer's support site. The update will include the sound drivers for the board as well as memory controllers etc. there. Or you can toss the software disk to browse the options seen on the screen or manually browse the folders for the setup.exe file in the audio folder.

I tried that already, I went to Compaq's site, typed in the comp's model and downloaded the sound driver installed it and this poped up:

Is it very bad?? Lol

Reaktek has always had some fun with their onboard drivers for some reason!

I've heard this even on older systems where you fought to get drivers to work. The message there however seems to point at another type of board driver being needed if it didn't go on right when getting the update. One thought would be going into the device manager and looking for any yellow marks next to anything there.

You may have to right click on that and choose the uninstall option to see Windows then prompt for new hardware detected where you can run the upsate again or load from the software cd that came with the board in the event you ended up with the wrong driver set at CompaQ. The message there points to the system memory or SMBus driver most likely.

Thanks for the help so far :). Unfortunately, I can't install the driver anymore. I went to the device manager and found 3 items with yellow marks, unsistalled them and tried to install the driver again and nothing. Do you think this would be fixed if I get a dedicated sound card??

Thanks again.

You may have to use an uninstaller but you are getting close by seeing the yellow marked items clearly seen. One idea when right clicking on those items and seeing them removed is now trying to get the main board drivers to go on after restarting the system to make sure that they were totally unloaded from memory.

That's the likely reason the reinstall attempt saw a snag when tried. But now you are starting to see some progress. After the restart of the system take a second look in the device manager if you don't see any prompting by Windows with the new hardware found popup.

Also look under sound, video, and gaming devices to see if the Realtek name is on anything there. Right click and choose the uninstall option with that as well before restarting. Anything hung there will be gone where a fresh set should go on after.
