New Comp; USB Controller Doesn't Work

Howdy ya'll.

Just built a new system and my USB controller decided to stop workingl. It was fine last night (played a game /w my USB gamepad) and now -- nothing. Refuses to work.

I've tried enabling and disabling the device in Device Manager to no avail; I've tried uninstalling it but Windows cannot find a driver for it when I try to reinstall. I have SP 1.

I'll be grateful for any help you can provide.

These are the ones on the top of the case; I'm using a Centurion (532?) case.
My guess is that the headers are installed incorrectly. If you built the computer, i would refer to the manual and make sure that the headers for the USB ports are hooked up correctly.

Do the back ones work?

No joy on the back USB ports either; and I built the computer. I already had Directx 9.0c installed but reinstalled it anyway. :P

As I can understand, it is not the usb port on the back of your comp...

Try plugging your gamepad in another usb port (in preference, the back because its directly on your mobo). If it is working, it may just be that the cable that join your usb port to your mobo is disconnected (see the manual for this)

Or try using a different usb device: another gamepad, a mouse, or anything usb

Finally, when you plug your gamepad in, go chek if it is the device manager and in the game controller (in control panel)

What chipset do you have? Both the Intel 865 and ICH5R chipsets have a proclivity for burning out due to (it is thought) an inability to handle higher current draws.

Those who do have these chipsets have been advised to use a powered USB hub to feed their devices, particularly those that are inserted and removed often to reduce the risk of blowing that southbridge.
