New Components Compatible With Old Case?

Hey guys, I'm planning on doing my first ever build, and I have an old Gateway 700GR. The processor has gone bad in it but I'd like to salvage the hard-drive.

I would like to, temporarily, use the Case, PSU, and HD, with a new ATX motherboard, RAM, and CPU. Is this possible? I know I may need to purchase some adapters for the power connections, and possibly drill some holes in the back of the case. But will the Motherboard fit into the old one's spot?

Thanks

From the limited research I just did, it seems like the case is BTX form factor, which would probably mean you can't fit an ATX board in it: "The BTX form factor motherboards are incompatible with most of the ATX form factor cases and vice-versa. In particular, BTX motherboards are 'flipped' compared to ATX and mount on the opposite side of the case."

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct, its a BTX case and an ATX motherboard won't fit. You will have to buy a new case and also recommend a new power supply and new hard drive if the hard drive is the original drive that came with the system. The reason why is this system is already like 6 years old or so. Usual life span on hard drives are around 5 years, but they can go out any time from day 1 on.

Hello,
I dont know to much about this topic but in my opinion they should be compatible.

*shakes head* it was for airflow design... not to cut corners. putting the cpu at the bottom, where cool air will be...is a good idea at least to me, i have no qualms with it.

Also isn't it good if you have a very hot graphics card and if there is a fan right there you get a way cooler one. Idk why but i just pulled that straight out my but and typed it.

Wow, I'm just amazingly surprised I was able to answer a question correctly here. I must be learning something! :-P
