New computer build can't access internet

My son and I just built a new computer (It was a blast!!).

We have one problem that we can't track down. We are not able to establish a network connection to the workgroup which allows access to the internet.

I have tried mulitiple times to use the network setup wizard to establish the connection but to no avail. I know I am missing some detail or step but I don't know what it is. When I click on My Computer the workgroup is identified as the correct one but I don't see other computers on it. I know they are because I can see the other computers from my old computer.

First log on as administator and go into the device manager and look under network devices. If you don't see the name of the adapter you use you never installed the drivers and setup the connection properly. What type of connection are you getting online with? dialup, dsl, cable, Lan?

It's cable and XP OS, our two other computers are setup identical to my new build. Do I need to use the MSI MB driver setup disk? The MB manual didn't say to use it, just use XP or Vista.

A network adapter is installed call 1394 Net adapter.

1394 is the firewire port... not what most people use to network. You'll need to install the motherboard drivers for sure.
 
Yeah, I figured that I need to install the drivers.

edit: I just did and I don't see the "normal" network card icon. But I can access the internet and see the other computers.

Quick question; do I need to install the mb drivers for Vista if I run XP?

No, definitely not. I doubt it would let you install the Vista drivers even if you tried, and if it did for some reason, it could cause some major problems.

If you go to My Computer>My Network Places>View Network Connections... you should see the connection that is putting you though the internet.
 
You can also look at network activity by right clicking on the taskbar and choosing the taskmanager to open the networking tab. That will show you the connection speed if you are online at any time. At this point depending one the chipset for the board you are running you would go to NVidia.com not Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, or any other make for nForce Vista updates. I just went through this with the Asus board here where their support still hasn't released anything but their Probe 3 temperature monitoring utility.
