New computer build, need AMD processor help.

I was looking at the Phenom II Quad and Dual cores. Which would be better for gaming? I hear quad cores interfere with gaming graphics. If so why? Also, wiki says the Phenom II comes as a 2.7 Ghz. I can't find those anywhere. Anyone know? If you know of a better "hardcore gaming" processor please let me know.

I prefer AMD because I have had better luck with them and gaming performances. If you advise I go with an Intel or something let me know which one and why, not just because you like intel, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry <DELETE>

forgot you said AMD. Like many processors the quad cores are the future. IF you want to game RIGHT NOW buy the dual core, if you want your machine to be able to keep up without a processor update, buy the quad.

The new P2 wont be out till next month thus why you can't find them.

I still have great graphics with my quad so I will write that as a MYTH.

I would wait till next month when the PII come out and decide then.

Well what would be a good alternative? I wouldn't mind having a minimum 3.0 Ghz Quad. If I have to go Intel I will I just want proof they are better and not just Intel fans saying so. I can wait till the P2 comes out but what specs are we looking at with those?

Ok, sorry to be naive about this but I just have a hard time finding the best of the best, which leads me to question my conclusions. I was researching AMD Phenoms and see that the X4 seems pretty good. What is the max stock Ghz you can get from those? And is a Phenom II going to be that much better to actually wait a month to buy it? Will it be worth the price differences?

So which is the best quad core out there right now for gaming? Let me ask it like that? Ill build a computer around that.

There is not a good quad-core for gaming because 95% of all games have no quad support at all. Even games that claim to have quad support hardly use the quad...most use 3 cores.

If you wanna go with the cheaper quad Phenom vs Intel then the Q6600 OR the Q9300 is the best choice.

If its I7 vs Deneb then Deneb would win depending on your budget. It can be used with AM2+ boards and DDR2/DDR3 memory.

I7 requires a new socket type + DDR3 so it will be more but its faster clock for clock with current the old Intel quads about 20% faster per clock.

It comes down to cost really.

I7 (lowest clock) $280
DDR3 TRI 3GB Memory $200
Motherboard $250-300

Where as the slower quads are
Q6600 $180
Q9300 $250
DDR2 4GB = $40
Motherboard $80-150

Old school Phenom say 9950 125w version I heard 3.0ghz from talented/lucky people.

90% of the people I have talked with can take a Q6600 to 3.0ghz without increasing the vcore...this is with G0 not the B3 (B3 are rare to get now a days)

I hit 3.2ghz with 1.38v...my chip could easily hit 3.4ghz-3.6ghz I bet but I lack the cooling and I don't want to go above 55c.

In my own personal opinion I would wait until they have refined the technology of Intel i7 processor line. The i7 processors are 130 to 140 Watt. In the future I am sure they will bring it down to 95 Watts or lower.

The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550, or the Q6600 are 95 Watt processors and great alternatives to the i7.

I still believe that Dual-Cores are best gaming processors currently. The E8400 is a 3.0 gigahertz 65 Watt processor that has 6 megabytes of Level 2 Cache and priced at $160.
