New computer build

I have a i5 4690 but my next computer I want to use the i5 but I don't know which one. I would like to step up when building a new computer. I did a cpu compare with the i5 6600 but it didn't do anything for an improvement. The i5 4690 is the 4th generation and the i5 6600 is the 6th generation so I'm missing something and I have been out of the game for building computers because I'm retired and need to re educate myself. Also I have no idea on what motherboard to use but I want to keep the cpu and motherboard under $250 each. Can anyone help an old man?

What are you doing currently where the 4690 is insufficient?

You don't really have that much to gain for the money you'd spend unless you do a lot of 100% CPU type of tasks like video encoding. Even then, jumping to the 6600 would only be a couple of percent faster.

Your right but when building a new computer you always want to have a better computer than the one you built 2 years ago. So what would be the best i5 I could buy or could I just go to the low end i7?

What is your computer slow at currently? What is compelling you to build a new one? There's likely more cost-effective upgrades you can do than a CPU sidegrade.

If you're just bored then by all means have fun with a new one but I'm curious what data requirement isn't being fulfilled by your current setup.

Thank you but I leave the K series alone because if I want to overclock I should just buy the next better CPU. I think that's right? I'm also sold on the i5 6600

Why pay for a more expensive CPU when you could overclock and get the same or higher than that next highest CPU, without paying for it.

But yeh, if your not into the K-series CPU or overclocking, the i5 6500 is a great CPU, I used it for 5 little machines we built for the hospital. Plenty quick for sure!!

It's not going to be much faster than what you have now. At least if you got the K you could overclock it and then you might start noticing some performance increase. My i5 2500K from 5-6 years ago is still running great and that's from the 2nd generation, there's no real need to upgrade from 4th to 6th generation unless you had a very low-end 4th generation CPU. But, it's up to you.
