New computer - For brother, 2nd build :D

Hi there, i am thinking of getting my brother a new computer, on a serious budget, i have looked around and seen that i can get an Ok(ish) spec for £160
i don't really have a budget for this, it is basically the lowest possible price for an ok system

This is what i have come up with:

and i don't think it's too bad for that money though, not sure about the processor though, but it's cheap

And i know that socket A is basically useless for upgrading, but this is the kinda thing that will never be upgraded

It will be used basically for surfing the web, playing games and homework (in the future)

The kind of games that need to be played on it aren't great graphics, the latest game my brother has is from 2001 and it can be played on my laptop with 192mb ram and 32mb integrated graphics at full quality no probs.

Basically i wanted to know what everyone thinks of it, and the processor, one ebuyer it says it si a Geode, i have looked around and foudn that they were made by AMD, but i have never heard of them before, anyone had any experiencs with them??

Please remember i am on i seriously low budget, i would be paying so as little as possible

160 is the price?
its cheap, but if you just want a cheap computer,,,
get it from dell; that way you save money and get a lcd screen also...
they give out pretty good deals for its price.
 
how nice of you to get that for you brother. Thats about $200 USD right? Thats as cheap as I've seen. You could try getting one of those barebones systems sometimes those can be cheaper.

the only thing about pre-made computers is that they have to make money so they cut the performance. I think he's better off building one. Unless you want to buy a dell and then get a new PSU for it thats normally the problem with cheap computers (well everyone I've tried to fix).

well, i had looked at pre-built but i just wanted the tower, no LCD, i have a copy of Xp MCE that i wanted to put on, and more importantly i woudl enjoy bulding it. The cheapest dell is £279 in the UK, it has slightly more features, but has no option to not have a CRT so i don't want it, i'll have a look at the barebones ones now, see if it'll work out any cheaper

EDIT: i've just looked at the barebones systems, and the cheapest is £60, with just a case and mobo, so for the one i priced up at the top i can get the mobo and case for a very similar price, and in regards to getting it fro my brother, well, thats really just an excuse to my parent's, they can't see that over time computers break and i have one that needs replacing, so perfect reason :P

I see. What you had in the first post is probably the best choice then. A lot of people think electronics last forever with no maintnance. have fun building that :) .
 
i think i'll be going for that then, just got to persuade my mum and dad that in this day and age 64mb or ram is not practical for windows XP or gaming, or anything for that matter (ok, maybe ms-dos). My only slight concern is the processor, as i mentioned before it is an AMD? Geode, could someone please tell me a little more about these if possible, thanks

or you could google it. Actually I have a old compaq that has windows 98 and the max amount of RAM it could have was 64 mb. What I learned on this website was that AMDs are for gaming and intel CPUs are for multitasking but both can multi task and play games its just one is better for one thing and the other is better for the other thing. Wow this website really has taught me something :) .
 
thanks lamilia, but i was actually wondering if anyone knew what the performance from AMD geodes was like, form what i've read thay are:
low power consumption
Low heat output
high power output (processing i think)
and thats about it
