Im getting a new computer (Finall) and come to a predicament. I dont know whether to get a Amd 64 3500+ or a P4 3.4ghz (not Extreme). PLz help me out and i dont know whether i sohuld get 1gb of ram or 512. ALSO could u plz lemme know some good cases under 100$. THXXXX

I think the AMD64 3500+ will be alot faster than the Intel P4 3.4GHz, in almost all applications (i'll probably get killed for this lol). I would personally definetly go with the AMD as it's also a great overclocker.

1GB of RAM is usually a good step, as it will nix your page file (not entirely i don't think) and allow for faster load times in alot of apps and overall better performance. 512MB is fine but it's easy to overload with todays games and especially if you are using demanding programs like photo editing or video imaging.

For cases, lianli's are REALLY nice...but for under $100 maybe out of your reach. Enermax makes pretty good ones, Antec/Cheming makes the Alienware looking ones (older style), there's really a whole plethora of cases to look at. You will probably want a thicker aluminum/steel material, full/mid ATX, room enough for at least 4 case fans (unless you are using another method of cooling), and a window if u plan on lights of something fancy inside to look at.

I have a P4 3.4 GHz and it works great for my needs (encoding, FORTRAN programming, a little gaming, etc). I can't really say anything bad about AMD chips, though, because I've never used them (maybe my next build). You'll definitely want to go with a gig of RAM unless you just want one of those CPUs for bragging :) . As far as a case, like 4W4K3 said there are many. Its really personal preference. I have an Antec Plusview 1000 and a Kingwin Mutant X (both under $100) and I like both of them.

FORTRAN holy crap :P

4W4K3 is right, the athlon 64 will be better for almost everything, basically video compression go intel otherwise amd will be the better pick.

basically video compression go intel otherwise amd will be the better pick.
And even there, if you're able/know-how-to work with AMD64 extensions, id even give the advantage to AMD there. Slight? Maybe, but at least par.

I would go with the P4, however it depends on what your going to use the computer for (overclocking is best with AMD). I have a P4 HT 3.0Ghz and runs great. If your going to use it to play games mostly, i would get the P4 with 1GB of ram. ANd go to www.newegg.com, they have great cases. (X-Blade rules!)

Only if you have damn solid memory.

Uh you kinda contradicted yourself a bit here and here
Also, its somewhat universally accepted that AMD boxes are quite superior due to the onboard memory controller :)
