New computer isn't that fast

I bought a new pc and had a quad cpu put in and 2 gigs of RAM. My older pc was getting slow and I had a "read" error 2 weeks ago so I finally ordered it and have it now, and I am still playing around with it.

I don't think it's as fast as the P-IV 2.4 I was using before though. The raptor hard drive is fast though! Using winrar and quickpar I see nice difference in this. I hope to get some RAID 0's in the future for even more speed. I don't think programs load that fast and I've noticed that in paint shop pro this thing has some of the characteristics of when my other pc was getting slow. When I switched back to PSP from another program the images slowly load (in chunks)......whereas they used to just be there instantly on my old machine. Is this RAM? I would think 2 gigs for this is good, maybe this RAM just sucks.....

I have not made my pagefile larger but I don't actually know how RAM and the pagefile work....only that they are both some form of memory at the PCs disposal. (if someone has a link with an explanation I'd love to know this and more about windows in general)

Thanks!

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Or is this from the video card? I had an "all in wonder" in the old machine and that thing was about 4 years old and the fan stopped working over a year ago. I had extra fans put in that case so it never died  I would think the video card I have now would be a world better than that one...?

That 8600 is a slow card, but it should not be a problem with running PSP. It would mostly effect gaming.

I know photoshop is a ram hog, and increasing your page file for it works wonders. But I am guessing you are using paint shop pro instead (PSP). I don't know about the page files for it, but it could be a problem if you have it set to a small file size.

post the specs of your components please? RAM, GPU and things like that. thanks

This will be an dumb question but what is "GPU"? I don't know that one. I also don't know more about the RAM other than what is in my signature.

Yes, I am using paint shop pro, the pagefile size is what it was from the installation. I have not changed it yet. I am waiting for the other HD to arrive. I was told it is better to have that file on another HD (other than the one that has the O/S on it). I expect another raptor to arrive later next week (150 gig)

It is currently 2 gigs. On the older machine I upped it to 3 gigs and had it on my other HD (the WD 500gig)

Is this a bad video card? I didn't get anything special because I just wanted to be able to have dual monitors. When I get some more money (dreaming) I'll get another card and run an LCD in addition to what I have now.

No I don't game. I can't justify an $1800 game ;) I just have a PS 2 for that.

The description on the receipt is:

XFX 8600GT 540Mhz 512MB DDr2 Memory VGA/DVI/TV-Out PCI-Express video card. Is there more?

my previous computer was a p4 2.2 and my current machine blows it away.

since you didn't build your computer perhaps you're getting skimmed?
run dxdiag and see if you are getting the parts.
perhaps you're using vista?

if your computer came from a dell/hp/sony/etc then perhaps it's all the bloatware they've installed?

No, I would never by from dell and the like. It was built here: http://nanosys1.com/

I'll try that.....I see it's something on windows so here it is:

Is there a way to test the RAM?

^ Even if he was using Vista, it should perform a lot better than the way he describes. My computer isn't as good as his, and it easily runs Vista.

Windows Vista 32-bit probably would run faster than Windows XP with his system because Vista utilizes a dual core processor while XP does not.
