New Computer Lab

So, this is my first post, and its kind of a challenge to all the computer building people here. Our school is in need of upgrading our computer lab to entirely new computers. This means 20 or so new computers, and a server. So, is anyone brave enough to take on the challenge of designing 20 odd computers? If so, then read on, brave adventurer!

2 computers will be used entirely for video and picture editing

18 computers will be used for general software, such as Word, but will also include programs such as Solid Edge, Bently Microstation, and Sketchup.

We also need a server that will be responsible for all of these computers. Every class that uses these computers will be saving to this server. It will also need a way to be backed up regularly.

It would be nice if the normal computers could be under $1,000, the video editors under $1,500, and the server under $2,000.

So what...they are planning on building computers for a lab, or do they need guidelines for some HP computers they plan on buying. I don't recall ever seeing a school that doesn't buy prebuilt PC's.

This time, our lab is considering buying the parts and building them ourselves. so I'm looking for what other people think would be good builds for the computers.

Instead of doing a self-build go for a company like Dell, otherwise when something fails then you could have a big problem trying to souce parts quickly whereas the big companies will have them in stock for quick shipping.

To reduce overheads that you get with Vista I'd actually get XP for the $1500 machines as well. That also makes it simpler to manage than having two different ways of configuring things.

Yeah, not too many ppl are adjusted to Vista... Make sure it's XP Pro. My question is, security? Do you know how to restrict things?

The system admins for our lab can take care of the restrictions. We just wanted to go with something that was more customizable and upgradeable. The computers we have now are the ones we have had for the last 6-7 years. I just wanted to see, if you could design the computers yourself, what you would do with them.
