New computer, real quick question:

Hey im in the process of getting a new computer primarily for gaming. I am on a budget, and my debate is this:

Go for Dual Core, and have a more budget video card (which i can upgrade later)

OR,

Go for something like a P4 Prescott, and put in a nice video card to begin. Is It necessary to have a dual core for gaming?

Also, if i go single core i will go with the Intel prescott, but from what i hear/read for dual core AMD is the way to go. Am i on point with this?

-thanks in advance

well if ur gaming u definitly want a dual core AMD. so i would get the dual core amd now and a decent graphics card(tell us wat type of budget ur on for hte card) and then upgrade that in the future.

this is my tradeoff:

giving up: ATI Sapphire Radeon X800 XL Ultimate, PCI Express, 256MB, DVI, TV-Out

for

ATI Power Color Radeon X300 SE PCI-E Hyper Memory 256MB, DVI, TV-Out

will cost me around the same amount of money (with the added expense of the dual core)

Where are you buying from? I would go with the X800. If you want to build we can give you a list of recomended parts.

so i guess nobody read my original post (aside from first reply)? Im well aware of which video card is better, thats not my debate.

It's my understanding that few games take advantage of a dual core processor, yet. More games are going to come out with will, but as of now a better video card will most likely have more of an effect on gaming performance.

Anything involving data sent to the processor takes advantage of dual core processing. Dual core is two processors on one die so it's like having a dual processor system.
I would recomend going with the dual core an less expensive graphics card.

if you want to play the games of today as good as you can then do the prescott and good gpu....if you want to play the games of tomorrow as good as you can then go with the dual core

very few games make use of the dual core processor, but it does work well to play games and run other tasks in the background...as few games make use of the dual core, and your windows is probably not 64bit...this is a chip made for futur gaming, not the games of today

and since most people here don't know anything about maximizing hardware efficiency and just think that high price must equal high quality...it doesn't suprise me that they would all go dual core

Hell...I play HL2 maxed out on a celeron with a radeon 9250 and 512Mb RAM cause it's set up properly

And what setup allows you to play HL2 maxed out with a 9250 and a celeron? Does this include HDR on full also? If you used software to tweek your computer, could you explain?
