I just got a new computer that uses Windows 7 and am looking for free programs to protect it. I don't know a lot about computers, so I don't know what I need to put on it and what programs are actually legitimate. I want my computer protected against viruses and things like that. Thanks for any help.

Take your pick. I'm currently using microsoft security essentials for AV protection. Works well enough. I don't remember the last time I've had a virus on my PC.
