New computer - won't start up

Hi,
Thanks in advance for helping. It's my first build and I need some help. I put together a new computer and hit the front power button and nothing happens. No fan hum or even a sound from the speaker, nothing. There is an LED on the motherboard and is lit up when I turn on the power supply. I re-read the motherboard manual and checked the connections, etc. Any ideas what might be wrong? I think it might be the power supply unit but I don't have an extra just lying around. Any way to check it? Any help would be great. Thanks again.

I had the exact same problem on a comp a few builds back... The problem with mine was that I had too many brass stand-offs in the case and they were shorting the motherboard.

Take the motherboard out the case, lay it on some foam or something, connect it all up and check it then! :) Hopefully it'll work!

Depending on the power supply on the back of it the button might need to be switched on. Also make sure you read the manual in where to put all of the leads.

Also something i had to do with my build was to make sure all the power cords were plugged into the motherboard. One plug or on pin of a plug is off than that can make the difference.

Kornowski,
Thanks so much. You were exactly right. I left the paper washers off and it grounded it to the case. When i first put it in there i saw that and wondered if it mess with the grounding...it did. The only problem is that now the monitor won't show anything. The light on the monitor is orange and I can't install the OS. Any ideas?

It works now. I searched around the forums for some sound advice, much like yours Kornowski, regarding a similar issue and it fixed it right up. I disconnected the power supply from the motherboard, took the battery out and resituated the RAM ...and it works. Don't know the exact reason why it works now and before it doesn't but maybe not a full contact somewhere. I took out the graphics card, I have yet to see if it works but I'll get there soon enough. I got windows to load/boot at 7:30 this morning before work. Thanks so much guys.
