New Computer

For a web server, how good would typical $1,000 a AMD X6 build work? I need multithreading for my server and my current computer is a seven year old P4, so that's not going to cut it. However, I'm thinking of buying something more along the lines of a regular desktop than a blade server or anything like that.

How much worse would a typical desktop build for a $1,000 be than a dedicated server at that price? Obviously, I'm not going to waste money on graphics cards or anything like that.

Thanks,

Are you looking to buy a server to run for a business or are you looking for a server to run out of your house for something you're doing. If you're looking at getting one for a business I'd say you should spend the extra money and get some actual server hardware as the overall design tends to be more expandable and reliable than standard desktop hardware. Even if you spent the same amount of money, getting a slightly slower server would, in my opinion, be better than buying faster desktop hardware. If you're just going to be running something for your own purposes out of your house, desktop hardware wouldn't be too bad since you're the main person who would be using it most likely.
