New computer...

Hey.
Well, I'm pretty much a newbie to the world of computers - after about 6 yeras of running a 350mHz iMac, I decided I wanted to upgrade a little...

Ok, well, I'm 14, and I don't really know very much - so if you could keep it simple, I'd be grateful :D

I have around £500 to spend, which is about $800 I think, and I was looking at computer to mainly run games.. So I don't really need multitasking stuff.. The thing I was most confused about is AMD and Intel MHZ measurements - my friend suggested I get an AMD, but I don't really understand how fast they are, because of the difference between Intel and AMD.

this is what I was looking at in paticular - albeit with a few upgrades (1gb RAM, 160gb hard disk).

Does anyone know anything about this? Or use one maybe?

Any tips/advice about it would be helpful!

I know nothing about the brand(being in the states and all) but it seems fairly decent if you upgrade as mentioned. It won't be a gamming machine, but it should be find for surfing the net and such.

The Sempron 3000 is suppose to be fairly close to say a Celeron 3GHz. My laptop is a Sempron 2800 and I'm fairly pleased with it. I mean for the internet and such, it does fine(and I'm normally running at only 800MHz)
 
It's decent, but i would upgrade the memory and video card, especially if you want to play some of the newer games.

Yeah, oops, I forgot to mention that...
Isn't 1GB RAM enough?
And is the 256mb Radeon any good, I was thinking about that..
On another note, for the 3400+, will that be fast enough to run all games nowadays?

I wasn't really looking at that in paticular - I don't really like FPS's, I prefer strategy games, and similar.. Rome Total War, Cossacks 2 etc.

But I want a system that'll hold up for a few years and still run well on the newer games.
 
 
buy other stuff

yeah you can deffinatly get a good gaming computer for 800 bucks. you should be able to get a dual core processor and motherboard for 350 like the amd x2 3800+, and match that with atleast a gig of ram for about 100, and another 70 on a hard drive, a case/power supply combo for maybe 40 bucks, and 200 is left over for a pretty descent video card....id do some serious window shopping before you dump money into something that will be obsolete sooner than youd like
 
Heres a tip:

If you are getting a case with a PSU (Power Supply) that comes with it I would reccomend upgrading it as these things are usually cheap and not any good, you will end up blowing stuff if you use one of these most likely...Cos what Watt they are is not true power, its usually around 100W less that it says.

Getting a better PSU is also better to pro long the life of your graphics card!

Oh yeah and if you get a descent PSU, have a look on it, it should say if its true power or not, if it is that means a 500W PSU is actually 500W and not any lower:)

Oh, ok..
But, that's buying the parts seperately, right?
The main problem being that I have absoloutely NO idea what the hell a computer looks like in the inside, and where everything goes, which was why I was looking for a pre-built one...

Yeah, I've read that, I'm just not comfortable with doing it myself- seeing how old I am, it's takes me ages to save up, and my parents can't help me either, so if I screw something up I have to replace it all myself..

But I dunno.
Changing questions slightly, I saw another PC for £577...

Athlon 64 3700+
1GB RAM
256mb ATi Radeon
120GB ATA Hard disk

Any good?

Not great, considering that what I posted would kick its butt. Isn't there anybody around you that could build it for you for like $50? A friend? Because you would still save money....

And it isn't hard to build it yourself at all. The parts are pretty much self-explanatory, and if you have problems, that is why we are here. :)
