would an AMD san diego core 4000+ be better than an Pentium® 4 Processor 640 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB)

maninly for gaming (btw why would dell use a pentium for a "gaming" comp?)

Lol

Yeah generally speaking the A 64 4000+ would be a better choice for gaming. As to DELL using a Pentium processor, why not? Pentiums are very good for gaming as well. The only difference is that they generally AMD processors tend to perform better in games (although nothing major). So really, unless you are a hardcore gamer who wants 10 extra FPS, the choice is up to you. Both will perform very well and both will sattisfy your gaming needs. I personally would chose the 4000+ over the Pentium.

JAN :D

agreed, dell can never be described as make hard core gaming rigs. But then thats not there core market

AMD is the way to go for any serious gamer

AMD and Intel are equally good for gaming, although the AMD 4000+ would be a better choice then the Intel 3.2Ghz.

I'd go AMD.
As for Dell going with Intel, I'd imagine Intel is just willing to give them a better deal. Dell is in it for the profits, if they are able to make a machine cheaper because of a deal with Intel than it would cost with AMD, they will go for Intel. Intel gaming rigs still perform well. It won't be for a couple years until the performance difference between todays AMD chips and todays Intel chips will make a difference. And by then, todays stuff will be 20 months past obsolete.
Besides that, as wel all know, the graphics card makes more of a difference than the CPU. You can have the best CPU on the market for gaming, but if you are still using a MX440 AGP4x card, your rig still sucks for gaming.

yeah I agree, AMD is generally better for gaming however if you don't have a good graphic card then your computer won't be good for games.

firstly they are not equally good for gaming, but if your statement held true then why make your second statement?

??? could you elaborate

all too true

1. K8 processors are superior for gaming period
2. Dell uses Pentiums because they have an exclusive contract with Intel

AMD and Intel are equally good for gaming, although the AMD 4000+ would be a better choice then the Intel 3.2Ghz.
If you had said "Intel chips are more than competent for gaming" that would be fine -- but AMD and Intel chips are not equal performers for gaming

??? could you elaborate
Easy: no current generation Intel processor is not capable of playing a game (or playing it well, provided the rest of the infrastructure is in place). Whilst an AMD processor is a better choice, you can still play games plenty fine on Intel silicon :)
