hello everyone,

I am trying to get the max out of my old computer. And now id like to upgrade my cpu.
My motherboard is ga t671 mg (lga775 max fsb 800\533), my current cpu is e2140. Can i replace it with the e5400? or the Pentium D820?

Thanx,

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

Either way, I wouldn't bother putting money into an old socket like 775. I think if you're going to upgrade you should upgrade to a newer board and CPU all together - or if it's a laptop think about getting a new laptop if the performance isn't good enough for you.

Its a desktop. a new board would be nice but i have to save a little money to get there. a second hand cpu will cost me 20 euros so its not a big investment. so could a E5400 replace a e2140? they have the same specs except for ghz course.

Did this board come out of a packard bell computer? Not finding much info on this board. If so, do you know what the model of packard bell it was?

Well, probably packard bell didnt know either. The answer they gave me me was that it might work.
So i bought an e5200 and my computer didntstart up. all the lights went on but no bios beep.
Is that normal behaviour for a mainboard when it doesnt recognise a cpu?

But when i placed back my old cpu still no reaction. So istarted pushing cables and cards and then it worked again. I tried the e5200 again, but no. Now the second time i have my old cpu and my computer said i had a new cpu (didnt happen first time) and worked perfectly.

It may be that the BIOS does not recognize the new CPU and need an upgrade but with very little info on said motherboard I think you'll be frustrated with it.

That's the deal with proprietary systems, not very upgradable. I'd suggest that you save up some bucks and build yourself a clone system.

I've built a Celeron G540 system with 2x2 gig memory for under $200 but I used my old HDD and DVD-RW as well as my monitor, keyboard, mouse and Vista OS. This 2.5 Ghz Celeron is quite fast and run very well.

The new parts were CPU, motherboard, memory, PSU and case.
