New Desktop Computer

My mom would like to get DSL or Broadband on her computer since she is upgrading from Dial Up. She has an eMachine. We took it to the computer store down the street and they said that it wasn't compatible with DSL or Broadband so she had to get a new computer and to upgrade it to be compatible it would be better just to buy a new computer since its so old. I want to know what would be ideal for her. She doesn't do much other than pay her bills online and check her email. She books flights too. I don't want to have a very error prone computer because that worries her and she is paranoid about getting Identity Theft. DELL has a lot of promotion offers but I've had 3 bad experiences with DELLs and I don't like them. My mom is old and she doesn't need any fancy stuff. I don't want her to get Vista until the upcoming Service Pack when they fix a lot of bugs and patches. Does anyone know when that date is? Otherwise I want XP Home Edition.

Thats true, you can use USB but I have always thought it was alittle more unstable/buggie than LAN connection.

Most of the bugs have been fixed in Vista. It's starting to turn into a stable OS. So ahead and get vista, you should be able to download it when it's out. You're probably looking for a mid range computer, HP or Dell would probably work. The only Experiences Ive had with Dells are if you buy the low end, and they usually crash often. Invest a little and they will not crash.

Then again building one is the best choice :P

I never had problems under XP, although if you have a USB 1.1 connection then you may be severely limiting your bandwidth.

Which is why I would recommend using the LAN port if you have one.
