New Desktop:Pentium 4 vs AMD

I am looking into a new desktop computer from Dell or Gateway. The dell comes with a pentium 4 3.0ghz and the gateway comes with an AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 3800+. I plan on using this computer for the internet, word processing, photos and music. I do not intend to do any gaming. What are the quality differences between the two and which would be the best for me?

You dont need anything that powerdul for what your doing, but if you want to know whats best, the AMD X2 3800+ would be much better.

Yep I totally agree. What you're looking at is a powerful rig, especially for gaming, and you definately don't need it. However the AMD is much better in performance, runs cooler, and also tends to be less expensive than Pentium. Good luck on buying!

Not the AMD X2 series, there more expensive than a Pentium 4/D, but they are much better.

Yeh, the AMD is MUCH better, but what's the price difference, and what's the difference in the other specs?

If it's significantly cheaper, the P4 sounds like it would be sufficient for your purposes, but as everyone's said, the AMD is a much better chip.

I was doing some research recently, and unless you're doing a ton of compressing and such, AMD is typically the fastest CPU. And even the times the P4 is faster, it's never by that much... Comparing prices, I find AMD machines are about $100 less than comparable P4 machines!
