New Desktop

My uncle is looking into getting a new desktop. Basically he wants something fast (his current computer is seriously about 10 years old). For the most part the only work he does on the computer is surf the internet and occasionally type up a word document. I told him that pretty much any computer nowadays can do that with ease. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good desktop (preferably w/ brand and model)?

id say no more than $1000. he's really not using it for much so i don't think it should be anymore than $1000.

If all he needs is something to surf with and word docs you wouldn't near near that amount of money. Maybe $500, pushing it though. With $1000 you could build a decent gaming PC.

I think bestbuy is running a sale with an HP a1240n computer, HP 17" LCD, and free printer. That computer is a Pentium 4 3.0gHz with 1gb RAM and a 200gb HD.

u shuldnt build him a computer. when spending that kind of money and when ur using it only for surfing the web dell and hp is the way to go. u get hte monitor and everything u need with it.

No way. I have a P4 2.4Ghz with 512 Mb RAM and it's plenty for all my gaming needs (fine, I can't put high resolutions and max details, but you get the point).

I'd say a P4 low-end is plenty, with 512 Mb of ram.

Very true. I would never reccomend a custom built with 2x 7800GTXs 4Gs of RAM, 4 Opterons and 4x 30' plasma screens with a 100 Mbit/s internet connection to an old lady looking to occasionally surf the web and write letters!

If you are trying to build a computer for web surf only, about $300 is all you need. I would say P3 is fine with that. why P4?
Its just for word processing and web surfing anyway. Monitor cost more than the computer itself...

i wasn't really planning on building him a computer since im at school right now, but thanks for the suggestions guys. im gonna take a look at what kind of sales best buy/circuit city are having now that i know what specs to look for.
