New fella saying hi and asking advice.

I am trying to fix a mates computer. Its basically one someone has built themselves, but that person is currently unavailable for advice.

Problem is the computer just randomly turns off and restarts itself. Usually when there's a couple of tasks going on. Could this be because of a bad battery on the motherboard? Would replacing this be the most likely cure?

Many thanks in advance for any replies. :)

Maybe a heat problem. Try opening the side of the case and blowing a fan in front of it while using the computer, and see if it's still doing it.

Or it could be a faulty power supply, or not powerful enough. Did he recently add a new piece of hardware or overclock his CPU/GPU etc.?

If you're talking about the small round battery on the motherboard, that is what keeps the data of the BIOS (basic input/output system) from erasing. I'm not sure, but I don't think that can be the problem.

We need specifications on the hardware (CPU, RAM, GPU etc.), especially the ones of the power supply (check the sticker on the power supply and look for how many Amps (A, amperes) there are for the 12v line, the most important, and also look for total Watts.

It seemed to be ok for long enough and it just started doing it the other day. There was no more running processes than normal and there has been no new hard ware.

I initially thought it could be a software problem and backed up his data and reinstalled windows, but no joy.

There is a lot of dust on the inside of the computer and certainly a lot around the PSU vents. I will clean that out and see if makes a difference too.

Yes, it was the little round flat battery. I have taken the one out of my own computer for a try and all seems to be ok so far.

That used to happen to me when I had to plug the computer into the wall, no surge protector... I installed a new wall outlet and it was fixed.

It happened at my house and at my mates too...?

Think I just found the sticker... Seems to be 145w output and 4.2A?

Sounds quite low but its always been ok up til now.

Yes, that is abnormally low. Try taking a picture of where you found those values, or a URL if you found it on the web.

What GPU do you have? And RAM?

prob be worth checking the temps too just in case, might as well eliminate it as a problem, Download Speedfan and see what temps it brings up.

I had an Athlon xp 2700 that ran perfectly fine for the first couple of months and then suddenly began randomly resetting itself, I wasnt doing anything different to previous, no extra tasks. Speed fan was showing high temps so i took the side panel off and left it off, low and behold, no more resets
