New Forum User needs help with start up problems!!!

A couple of days ago, i turned on my computer which i hadnt used for a good while. at first, the hp logo appeared, but the color was slightly distorted (bluish green instead of regular blue and white.) Then the screen went black and some grey static-like characters appeared on the right side of the screen. I cut the computer off and on several times before i stated messing with the BIOS, but made no significant changes. I did set it to show the BIOS startup up thing before the computer fully boots up. I also was messing with the fan blade on the cpu, which was very dirty. so i thought that maybe it was overheating. i kinda cleaned some of the dust from the fan, tried it again, and it worked! BUt 20 min into operation, the computer restarted and experienced that same thing over again. i dont know what the deal could be.
To begin with, i have a very terrible set up (the computer's connected with a 3prong to 2 adapter and a regular extension chord. But a friend of mine said that shouldnt be a problem. I really need help! Hopefully somebody can help me!:confused:
 
either a video card or motherboard problem, and likely caused by overheating. I don't know if there's anything you can do about it if it's already bad but replace whatever's broken
 
well, i might have to change the motherboard and or video card then. and no, i didnt try it with another monitor but ill go ahead and try that to be more certain. and also, about an hour after i posted the first message, i started messing with the computer again, this time disconnecting the hardrive and reconnecting it. then i noticed that a connection for the fan was disconnected. i dont know whether it was like that already or if i disconnected accidently when i was disconnecting the harddrive. but i connected it and turned on the computer and it booted up normally. this is so confusing because i then tried to boot up with the fan wire disconnected (to the motherboard) and it booted up fine again. i havent tried booting up recently cuz im not home right now, but i appreciate you guys' help and will keep updating my progress.
