Hello all,

I am building my new PC from the ground up. I need a little advice on what should be in it. I know nothing about PC's *NOOB ALERT*, I never built one, and I asked 2 friends that are semi computer savvy and they think what I picked are good.

What I want to do with the Computer: Play games such as; Halo 3, CS: Source, World of Warcraft. - Edit videos and music -

Budget: $1, 200 CND

These are the specs I think that are the best.

Maxtor 500GB PATA Internal Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X1300 Pro / 256MB GDDR2 / AGP 8x / DVI / VGA / TV Out / Video Card
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ / 2.5 GHz Energy Efficient - Socket AM2 - L2 1 MB (2 x 512 KB) - Box (65W) [Dual-Core]
Thermaltake Tsunami Black Aluminum Mid-Tower Case Side Window w/400W Power Supply
Creative SB0792 Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Audio Value Pack
LiteOn 20X DVD+/-RW w/LightScribe OEM Black
Corsair Value Select DDR2 667MHz PC2-5300 2G Kit (2 X 1GB)

Most these items can be found at PC Village

Thanks for your time. :)

P.S: Please move if in wrong forum.

Your missing a motherboard...

Are you planning on building this yourself or will you have someone help/build it for you?

Using PC Villiage and $1200 as a limit:
Asus P5K $149.95
Core 2 Duo E6750 $228.95
OCZ 2G (2 X 1GB) 800DDR2 Reaper HPC Edition (4-4-4-15) $119.95
Thermaltake Tsunami Black Aluminum Mid-Tower Case w/o Power Supply $124.95
Corsair HX Series 520W PowerSupply $114.95
Western Digital 500G Caviar SE SATAII 16M Cache SATA Hard Drive $114.95
LiteOn 20X DVD+/-RW w/LightScribe OEM Black $42.00
BFG Technologies GeForce 8600GT OC Video Card, PCI Express x16, 256MB DDR3 $169.95

Optional Sound Card (Motherboard has onboard 8 channel 'high definition' sound):
Creative SB0792 Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Audio Value Pack $51.95

Total Without Sound Card: $1065.65
Total With Sound Card $1117.60

I would have liked a better video card to go with the CPU but the price spikes after the 8600GTs.

IMO, I will downgrade everything but getting a better GPU.
CPU: Intel E6550
MB: GigaByte GA-P35-DS3R
GPU: eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320Mb
RAM: OCZ 2G (2 X 1GB) 800DDR2 Reaper HPC Edition (4-4-4-15)
HDD: Seagate 250G Barracuda 7200.10 16Mb Cache SATAII HD
DDVD burner: LG H62L SUPERMULTI 18X BLACK SATA
PSU: Ultra X-Finity 600-Watt @ tigerdirect.ca ULT31847 K
case: what ever you like
OS: Windows Vista Premium 64bit OEM in case you need one

The total will come around or slightly over $1200 dependings what case you are choose

thanks for the quick reply

If I use Xion II Black Case would it be better?

thanks again, this helps
A case is a case. I don't like PSUs that come with cases though, they are usually cheap garbage even if they say they have some crazy wattage.
CPU: Intel E6550
MB: GigaByte GA-P35-DS3R
GPU: eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320Mb
RAM: OCZ 2G (2 X 1GB) 800DDR2 Reaper HPC Edition (4-4-4-15)

That's pretty good. I went with the 6750 because it is ~$15 more than the E6550 and at that point, why not? :D

I'm feeling lazy, what's the total cost of that system?

CPU: Intel E6750 $229
MB: GigaByte GA-P35-DS3R $150
GPU: eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320Mb SUPERCLOCKED $340
RAM: OCZ 2G (2 X 1GB) 800DDR2 Reaper HPC Edition (4-4-4-15) $120
HDD: Seagate 250G Barracuda 7200.10 16Mb Cache SATAII HD $73
DVD burner: LG H62L SUPERMULTI 18X BLACK SATA $40
PSU: Ultra X-Finity 600-Watt @ tigerdirect.ca ULT31847 K $60 Mail-in Rebate $20 = $40
case: what ever you like
OS: Windows Vista Premium 64bit OEM $150

Total: $1142.
Price mainly from Pcvonline, ignoring current availability (some are out of stock) and shipping cost.

The only downside of my propose set-up is he may find HDD not big enough. Suggest adding another $50 to get a 500GB one or another 250GB HDD if he want to RAID.

Thanks you two. This helps me narrow down what I need. I can drive down to Toronto and buy the items there. I also did price compare and some items are cheaper in Tiger Direct. Thanks for the tips again.

This will play better if you will play TR legend in nextgen due to that 512mb or lower will result in 10fps
