Hi I am new to making Pc's and have searched around the web looking for parts to start a gaming Pc. I am looking for a computer within the price of 500-800 and will most likely be playing Starcraft 2 and similar games. I want to see if these parts are compatible and I would appreciate any feedback.

Here is what I have so far:

Motherboard
ASUS M4A78T-E Motherboard ($90)

RAM
Corsair XMS3 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 RAM ($83)

Video CardVideo Card
XFX HD585XZAFC Radeon HD 5850 ($185)

Hard Drive
Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB ($55)

Power Supply
Cooler Master GX Series 650W ($95)

CPU
AMD Athlon II X4 640 Quad Core Processor - 3.00GHz ($100)

Case
Cooler Master HAF 922M ATX Mid Tower Case ($100)

Looks like you have a good rig put together there. Couple suggestions..

Definitely upgrade to the 750GB harddrive as drambs suggested, that's a cheap and pretty decent upgrade in storage.

Do you have an optical drive you plan on installing? Noticed you didn't have one listed in your parts there.

gaming pc

Ok thanks for the suggestions. The timings on the ram is 9-9-9-24. I didn't know what rams were good but I had seen this recommended for a budget gaming pc.

Looks good, though Samsung's SpinPoint F3 and WD's Caviar Black range of drives are better than the Seagate posted.

Yes, it's compaitble.

.02 cnts?
Haven't seen the word crossfire yet.
If your planning a future CF then you'll need somthing like that mb/psu.
If no cf then you could save on the psu.

Here's an option for newer chipset and costs a little less.

Maybe put some of the saved to better branded memory, Gskill c8 perhaps.

only 16 more that your listed.

there are other mb combos w/this cpu

Hmm, nice find on that mb/CPU combo:good:

LOL at the other combo, $10 off the CPU for a $5 bracket that comes with it, haha.
If your budget can stretch, then go for it.

Do you recommend crossfire? What would be the difference with and without? Also if I did plan on getting crossfire, would I get two of the same video cards?

Swap out that Hard drive for a Samsung Spinpoint F3. They are faster. I'd grab the 500GB one if you don't want to pay for the 1TB. You can always add drives.

you wouldnt cf in the beginning,,,your single card is plenty good,,cf would be if the/your graphic processing demands grew in the future beyond what your current gpu can do to your liking,,,if that happens-then at that time you could add a second card like what you already have(which would be cheaper by then) to produce more gpu power,,,instead of buying a single , more expensive card at that time.

Monitor

Ok last thing, I have a acer monitor that is a couple years old and I was planning on using that. Will this monitor be able to keep up with the new technology or should I invest in a new one.

Okay, the only other thing is that my friend said my current monitor might not have a good enough refresh rate. Will this be a problem?

Max refresh rate at 1280 x 1024 is 75Hz, max at 1680 x 1050 and above is 60Hz, these are completely normal figures, there won't be a problem:good:

I would be interested in making a computer similar to yours

could you let me know your final list of parts you are going to buy

btw:do you know if this computer will be able to run games on very high graphics settings?
