new gaming rig

Good afternoon, I wanna build a gaming rig in a couple of months and here what I have compiled. Suggestions to make it better are appreciated.

budget is around 2000$CAN
I intend to overclock but nothing extreme to the point I would need to buy special expensive parts for cooling

CASE = ANTEC NINE HUNDRED BLACK STEEL ATX 120$
PSU = ANTEC CP-1000 149,5$
MOBO = ASUS P8P67 DELUXE or PRO about 240$
CPU = SANDYBRIDGE I5-2500k 3.3Ghz (TURBO BOOST 3.7Ghz) 230$
CPU FAN & HEATSINK = ????? NEED SUGGESTIONS ??
OTHER FANS NEEDED ??? ??
VIDEO CARD = EVGA GTX 580 500$
RAM = G.SKILL RIPJAWS SERIES 8G (2 X 4GB) 240-PIN DDR3 1600 104$

Well first off, this system regardless of its higher end parts will be SLOW. Why you ask, well the bottom line is that the hard drives tend to be the bottleneck of any system. Your specs include for a single drive, if this were my system there would be atleast 4 harddrives of equal size in a raid 10 configuration, which will offer reduncancy in the case that a drive fails. With raid 10 and 4 drives you could technically have 2 drives fail and you would not lose data.
So get more harddrives if you want a fast system, my raid 10 config on my server gives me about 250MB consitent (use hdtune to check it), whereas a single drive might yield.
Secondly, spend the money on a good cpu fan, goto newegg and read lots of reviews and find a fan for the cpu you want. The last 4 systems ive built, ive spent over 50$ on the cpu fan and about 25$ on a system fan. This configuration is so effective at cooling that i barely ever here the fans goin, so there is a benefit there.
 
You know, I could build a better system (monitor not included) for less than a $1000, so you may want to do more research.

less than $130 - compatilble motherboard with sata raid / and possilby sas raid / and multiple 2 or more pcie slots at 16x
about $150 a piece = $300 2 x ATI 5800+ or 5900+ video card (this would power 4-6 monitors at 1080P+
4 x $100 = $400 - 4 x 2TB hitachi sata drives in raid 10
$80 a good 650 power supply (antec or =)
$50 for a case

ok, i lied, end up being about $1010.00, but that pretty much all you need. Gbit lan integrated in to MB, and you will have to do some research on your MB, i havent kept up with them lately. Oh, and of course if u use windows you will need a license for that. hope this helps!
 
i just want to reiterate how important the hard drives, you could have a super fast system and it would be slow with out enough throughput to the harddrives. The only way to make it faster is using raid, so make sure you focus on that as being a must have, plus with the right raid config you can have more piece of mind regarding drive failures and data loss, without four drives you cant do raid 10 and you wont have built in data redundancy.

sorry to bust your bubble but that rig you got there is not faster than the one he posted(except for the raid).to the OP,just throw a little 60gb ssd in there for your OS and that would be a solid gaming rig.
 
the fact is that his posted specs have major bootlenecks, an ssd WILL NOT outperform a raid 10 config with solid sata drives. I understand that processor is truly state of the art, but for the cost to performance ratio its certainly not worth it and without careful design youll end up with a mismatched system and that would be a shame. The specs that I posted would be a 10 year machine, I doubt a heavily used ssd would last that long. If you like blowin your money on the latest and greastest, feel free. But in all reality who can really leaverage a quad core to 100% or even 6 cores for that matter.

Hey you know what though, there always has to be some suckers like you who pay intel or whoever for the development of new products, ill wait 6 month or a year after the price drops. Either i have a couple systems similar to what i posted and I can play all the latest and greatest at 1080p and higher on multiple monitors, so dude, get your facts straight, blow you cash if you want.

If you put your games and OS on a single ssd, your system will plain suck, but nice try!
 
first, the i5 2500k is only $20 more than the 1090T and out performs it by far,and you dont want me to mention the i7 2600k(which is crazy powerful).second, a SSD which has a MTBF of 2,000,000 would out last multiple HDD's (@500,000 MTBF) life span. for price/performance it has to be the new sandy brigde plateform,period.AMD has nothing on intel at the moment,well have to wait till bulldozer comes out.till than... intel all the way.

Yes, however MSI and Gigabyte announced that they are cancelling sales of Sandy Bridge motherboards because of the bugs that cause the Serial ATA ports to malfunction.

yes, you are correct,but i think its more than just MSI and Gigabyte that did the recalls.anyways, the OP said he will be ordering in a few months and by than the mobo's will be fix and reshiped to retailers.

that's kinda what I heard everywhere. I have also had bad experiences with AMD in the past so I kinda want to stay far away from them

the antec you picked does have good airflow, but lacks good cable management.ill recommand you a few cases that i think would be a good suit for you.
