New graphics card decision

Hello thanks for viewing

Im going to buy a new Video card but arent sure which one to buy. My choices are out of the nVidia 9800GT 512mb or something ATI (which ive never used). My price range is in $AUD which you may not be familiar with. Looking at up to $300 max.

PC specs are below. My only concern is my power supply is a generic brand 550W. I hear the 9800gt needs 400W. Hope im okay. Currently running 9600gt 1GB.

Thanks

Well, considering that you already have a 9600GT, I would either spend more money or not upgrade at all. The 9600GT runs slightly under the 8800GT, and the 8800GT is basically a 9800GT. You would be paying $120USD for maybe 2 or 3 fps more performance. I would go to the GTX 200 series or the ATi 4870 if I were going to upgrade, otherwise it's not worth it at all. Like I said in another thread, you're not paying for the performance of the new card, you're paying for the difference in performance between the new card and your card, which is actually a really good one.

I see.. but my one has crap clock speeds.. I cant play crysis at all.. maybe 30fps max on high settings (no shadows) im not sure what to do :S

i would wait seeings that ati 4900 series will be out in march to April and you can get a nice 4870 or 4870 x2 close to 40-50% off from price now

Well if you're looking to play Crysis I would look at or above the 9800GTX+ for Nvidia and the 4850 for ATi. But again, to really make it worth the price you would probably want to look at the GTX 200 series or the 4870. Personally, I don't think performance in one game is worth $200.

I would overclock the core and the shaders by a little, maybe 50MHz and 100MHz for the shader. Try playing the game with half of the settings on medium, like shaders and shadows, post processing, etc. There's a couple of good tweaking guides and mods that you can look up online to make the game run faster and look better.

Or you can go a totally different way... what i was thinking was you pick up a Antec 650w PSU from MSY thats about $143 i think? and pick up a Asus P5N-T Deluxe mobo for 145. I mean you could sell your current motherboard and psu and get some more money then get something better, IMO though.. Not too sure on the P5N-T board though since its getting bad reviews, but its your choice to take the risk or not.

I thought your case had only support mATX if im correct, you should be fine for now. Yea i dont know what im saying anymore, sorry for double post.
