New graphics card

So I had a EVGA GeForce GT 620. My friend gave me a GTX 645 which I switched to. Due to my limited knowledge of computers, I figured if it fit in the slot it should work. I put the card in and plugged it in to a TV through HDMI and I got no signal on every screen I tried. I put the gtx back in my friends desktop to make sure it didn't break in transport and it worked. So I tried my old card on my PC and that worked too. Just to see what would happen, I put my old card in my friends PC and that worked. But when I put his card in my PC it doesn't work. Any ideas what's going on? I'm not too PC savvy, but I can figure out basic instructions.

Try hooking up to the dvi port first to make sure it works. Is your pc a store bought pc or custom build? Is store bought, what model of pc is it?

I bought it online from cyberpower. I don't really have any other cables other than HDMI to hook it up. It worked with HDMI in my friends computer.

I'm assuming the video card doesn't need a power connector from the power supply to work correctly? I would actually try using a dvi cable first to an actual computer monitor to verify that works. It's a small known issue that some cards don't work on the first time in a new pc using hdmi, using dvi first to get it to boot and then set it up correctly will then allow it work on hdmi.
