New greenhorn needs help

It all started when I saw the W-Lan light going so fast that it almost looked like a constant light while using the desk top. Using the iPad or my wife's laptop it did just flash at normal rate. I tried various things which did not help. I then decided to use system restore. Which did not restore to any date I tried.
Fault code an unspecified error occurd (0X81000204) The drive may be corrupt.
You may retry windows restore after running, (chkdsk / R) which did also not run

Is there any other solution but starting from scratch.

The system used is windows 8.1 (which I do NOT like but was forced in to.

Any tips / hints are very much appreciated.

Not being able to restore the system is now more worrying than the the router flashing like mad as it still works at the moment

Thank you

Windows 8.1 is fantastic as you can select File History and choose restore without overwriting your files.

However before doing that, enter the router config settings (usually 192.168.1.1) and check that only people you know / allow are on the network and ensure you have a good WPA2 password.
