New Hard Drive as Storage: Format?

I just built a new system with my first bootable being an SSD. I also have a brand new hard drive that will be my storage drive, i.e. games, photos, files, etc.

Question: Does the hard drive need to be formatted if it is only going to be used for storage?

New drives don't come partitioned and formatted; they are completely blank. So yes, it needs to be partitioned and formatted.
