New hard drive for dell. need some help

Hey so i have a dell inspiron 600m with i think a 33 G hard drive that is obviously full and i keep getting those low disk space alerts and this thing is so freaking slow. I want to get a bigger hard drive but not sure where to start with the whole compatability issue and whatnot. I don't know that much about computers and I got some great help on this site when buying RAM so i figured i would ask for some more advice. Also, would you recommend an external over an internal? As of right now, im thinking of getting an internal unless someone convinces me otherwise. Anyway, thanks in advance everyone.
 
Seeing as this is a laptop, I would suggest an external or you have to replace the existing drive. You can easily add a USB external to it and compatability wont be an issue.

People seem to like WD Passport externals but you can get other brands.
 
thats a good point and something to think about, thanks. assuming i just stuck with replacing the internal drive, how do i find out what's compatible?
