New hard drive new problem

I just replaced the hard drive on my Dell inspiron 2200 and right off the bat the start up seemed pretty slow. I was able to use it but when I searched a folder everything locked up and the window said "not responding" I finally got to close it and upon browsing the internet it locked up again with a "not responding" notification. Everything locked up although I was still able to move my cursor. When I restarted the comp it would boot up fine but now I can't even access the welcome page for just sits with a black screen although my pointer is working. I'm not sure if it would effect the performance at all but the internal battery is dead and I have to run off wall power. any suggestions?

I wouldn't jump straight to saying it's a bad HD, but it does exhibit the symptoms. Get yourself some HD scanner (Seatools works well with most any brand) and scan it.
