i just installed a new WD Cavier 160gb sata and windows only registers 127GB when it should have 160. does anybody know what i can do to gain my other storage?
do you have Windows XP with service pack 2? i used to have the very same problem... that turned out to be the cause.
also could be the motherboard, but i doubt it.
ya, i have all the updates, and i am running an asus a8n sli premium motherboard. so i know its not that. i know other people have had similar problems, but i dont know what to do to fix it.
i just bought a new hdd recently too. i wasnt running windows xp sp2, and it only read as 120gb . from memory i upgraded nearly everything. bios, windows, drivers, chipset drivers etc. then it all worked out good =)

I had the exact same problem when I installed my 160gb drive. It's because the hard drive companies interpret 1gb to mean 1,000mb, when in fact, it is 1,024mb, as Windows reads it.
So, let's do the math.
160GB (Hard drive) = 160,000,000,000 bytes
160,000,000,000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 149.01GB
Now, why it only says 127gb on your computer is probably a driver error. Did you install the supplied driver properly, and reboot? If so, how about a reboot anyway? Try downloaded EVEREST Home Edition (free) and tell us how much it reads through everest.
